Old Business

  • Student Senate Resolution:
    Joellen here to answer question.
Matt: Are the halls going to be closed during thanksgiving break.
John: we are not sure yet.
Chris: What do you want from us in this resolution?
JoEllen: Want dedication in passing this resolution and work together in collaboration.
Chris Z.-Have you thought about staffing? Do we need HDs to stay?
JoEllen- When she asked SAs to stay for breaks they sometimes said they would since they got extra money. Not sure about HDs.
Matt- Would all students in the building be required to pay?
Joellen- Just students who want to stay. This should be enough to cover the cost.
Brooke: How are you going to find out what the demand is for this? If the international students are the main focus how will that help/no help them?
Joellen: People are more in favor of it than initially thought. This resolution was written out of a concern not necessary a demand.
Matt- Would the international students be segregated from this?
    Joellen- This is a concern
Kyle- The issue of safety. Will there be enough people to insure the safety of the people that are staying here.
JoEllen- I don’t know how many people are required to be here for a break so I don’t know.
Chris W.- Concern: Practically they should all live in one building, but not cost effective to live all over the place. What else are you going to pass regarding this?
Joellen- I kept the resolution vague to not dictate to reslife what they should do.
Matt- Are there other options to look into?
Joellen- We have not looked into a lot of other things.
Lizz- There may be a need for other students to come back early.
Katherine- How soon are you thinking this should be implemented?
Joellen- We were hoping for the fall 09
Cody- Board has already set housing fees.
Curtis- Even though this is geared towards international students we should think of it as for all students.
Joellen- Not necessarily for international students
Chris Z.- how will you get an HD to stay over break?
Joellen- I see them getting a money incentive
Lizz- The idea was that you could come in and out of an all-year dorm. But we have also talked about just adding a fee.
Chris W.- I don’t think that it is fair to make students pay if they are not staying in the dorms, why should they be charged.
Lizz- Do you think that the SAs would be willing to stay? K state has this model (year- round)
Chris- Currently the SAs on duty do not get extra compensation.
Lizz- Next step is to pass the resolution and then to do some more research and then collaborate on it to work on specifics.
Curtis- projected number of students that this would affect?
Joellen- Half of the international students, maybe??
Curtis- Could a person offer up their room for other students that need to stay over break? That way no one would have to pay extra. Have students sign a “contract”.
John- Students did not really like this idea when we tried it. Not popular. Not easy!!
Sharon- Where is the resolution in Senate?
Joellen- It has been first read and will be voted on this Sunday
Sharon- What are we committing to by passing this resolution. I am not personally ready to tell reslife to do this but I would be ready to form a committee.
Lizz- Identify a problem and then do research. Pass the resolution to see what other options we can do.
Chris W.-34, 35, 36 are more of what we want to commit to. Take lines 31 and 32 out. But we do want to look into options with student senate.
Informal poll- all who voted would unanimously like for these lines (31 and 32) to be taken out.
Lizz- We have had the problem identified by students who came to us and we have to do something about it. We want to analyze it with you to make a more informed decision.
Brooke- Will the students have to state at the beginning of the year that they want to stay? Are you looking into other options, besides just staying in the dorms? This is not the only option.
Joellen- they would choose to live in that dorm because it is open year round. ISAO said that some students move off campus because they can not live on campus. There would be an additional charge but we don’t know how much.
John- we would be asking people to more volunteer their time, not a lot would change as far as pay.
Lizz- It is uncomfortable for them to go home with people.
Curtis- Can international students just say that they are willing to stay with a host family. That way we are not forcing them into a host family? That way we can maybe house a smaller number in one house of one building.
Susie- We will have to talk about the committee.
Chris- motion to table until student senate discusses this and then talk about next week. Unanimously passed.
